![]() When the researchers compared flight patterns among species, they found that each one tended to stick to the maneuvers it was best at (something especially true of turns). "More complex maneuvers were made up of sequences of simpler maneuvers," Segre explains. Each of those simple moves repeated and combined into predictable patterns. Because there were four cameras, the researchers could reconstruct the flight pattern of each bird in three dimensions, measuring the number of times it accelerated, decelerated, turned, rolled, soared, or dove, among other maneuvers. Once they had the data, Segre's labmate, postdoc Roslyn Dakin, now at the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center in Washington, D.C., developed sophisticated software with her colleagues to analyze them. The scientists eventually made videos of 207 birds belonging to 25 species. "We were mostly terrified by the lightning," recalls Segre, now an ecophysiologist at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. In Costa Rica, Segre and his colleagues had to wade across crocodile-infested waters-at night-in the middle of a lightning storm. In Peru, the team's testing site was swarmed with army ants for 2 days straight. Segre and his team set up stations in three other locations: the Ecuadorian Andes, and high- and low-elevation camps in Costa Rica. Then they let the bird go and repeated the process. The researchers filmed each bird for about 30 minutes as it flitted between perches and visited a nectar-feeding station inside. Once they set up camp, they constructed a large cage outfitted with the solar-powered camera system and started testing their hummingbirds, one by one. He and his team hiked up mountains and crashed through jungles to find the perfect site. To prepare, he spent the better part of a year perfecting and miniaturizing a four-camera, computer-coordinated system for high-speed filming. He decided to try by filming hummingbirds in the wild, which are less inhibited about flying than their captive counterparts. That didn't stop Paolo Segre, then a graduate student at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. ![]() That's because "it involves a complicated set of possible movements, and it's very spontaneous." The new work not only helps explain their complex choreography, but it may also lead to more maneuverable robots and drones.īiologists have clocked how fast hummingbirds can fly and how long they can hover, but maneuverability-all that zipping back and forth-is "notoriously difficult to study," says Peter Wainwright, an evolutionary biologist at the University of California (UC), Davis, who was not part of the new work. Now, through herculean efforts, researchers are one step closer to figuring out what makes the animals so nimble. ![]() Pick up orders have no service fees, regardless of non-Instacart+ or Instacart+ membership.Hummingbirds are the fighter pilots of the avian world, diving and weaving at speeds of up to 55 kilometers per hour-then turning on a dime to hover midair, wings frantically beating, as they refuel on nectar. Unlike Amazon's Kindle, Kobo's software can sync directly with your Pocket account so you can go to My Articles under the More section of the Kobo's home screen. If you don't already have an e-reader, and you're as dedicated to reading the news as you are reading books, you should get a Kobo. Pocket lets you create custom article tags so you can search for them later on your Kobo. Instapaper’s digests also look nicer than the ones you can build for Pocket, but you can’t sync your Kobo with an Instapaper account. You should pick the one that best suits your needs, but know that if you're looking for e-reader integration, Kindles work better with Instapaper because Instapaper lets you send digests directly from your account, and Kobos work better with Pocket because you can view your whole queue directly from your device. While Pocket's premium tier is a bit pricier than Instapaper’s, its text-to-speech sounds closer to actual human speech and its offline mode allows you to store more than 500 articles at a time. There's no way to automate sending articles to your Kindle from within Pocket (something Instapaper offers), but you can do so with an extra third-party service. For $4.99/month, you'll get custom fonts, unlimited highlights, a permanently saved version of every article (in case they get deleted or modified later on), and suggested tags for easier organization. Pocket's free tier supports unlimited saving and cross-platform support like Instapaper, but it uses a tagging system instead of folders, and its appearance options are mostly locked behind its subscription. For $2.99/month, you'll get full-text search in every article, unlimited highlights, text-to-speech playlists from your phone, and the ability to build your own Kindle Digest, an ebook-like file that compiles a predetermined number of articles for you to read from your Kindle. Instapaper's free tier gives you unlimited saves, cross-platform support, folders for organizing articles (though there's no proper tagging system), and third-party API integration. They mostly function the same way-tap a few buttons and the article you're viewing will be stored in your account's queue so you can get back to it later-but their free offerings are a bit different, and each has a different advantage when syncing with your e-reader. The only two that currently sync with Kindle and Kobo are Instapaper and Pocket, both of which offer free and premium tiers. Kobo's software can sync directly with your Pocket account.īefore sending articles to your e-reader of choice, you'll have to pick a read-it-later service. If you have an iOS device, a Focus mode for reading could help you weed out any distractions, but if you have a Kindle or Kobo e-reader, those devices create a much better space for dedicated, distraction-free reading that'll help you finally put a dent in your to-read pile. Sure, you could dedicate some time to sit down and clear your article backlog on your phone or computer, but those devices throw so many distractions our way with push alerts and text chimes they're rarely the ideal vessel for attentive reading. ![]() You can use read-later extensions from Pocket or Instapaper to save articles on your Kindle or Kobo with a single click so you can revisit them later. ![]() ![]() By then, it’s a “set of ideas that organizes thought and behavior.” And in the third phase, which he calls “chivalry beyond formal knighthood,” the influence of chivalry pervades society. Tournaments come into being and literary romance and epic flourish. In the second period, such high-born men begin to cultivate an identity as knights. The first, he calls “knighthood before chivalry”-the beginnings of the military profession in the period before kings and other noblemen would have called themselves knights. The English, the Italians, the Spanish, and the Germans not only adopt it but make it their own. He writes that “virtually every medieval voice we can hear accepts a chivalric mentalité and seems anxious to advance it (and often to reform it toward some desired goal) as a key buttress to society, even to civilization.”Ĭhivalry is “pretty much a French creation,” and then it moves through Western Europe. But it also refers to the collective body of knights present in an action and-most important-a set of ideas and practices. ![]() It denotes “deeds of great valor performed by knights,” he says. The term “chivalry”-unlike “feudalism”-is a medieval one, and an essential concept for the age. “It’s an immense topic that goes everywhere,” he says. Though its influence is still felt, chivalry is specific to a historical period-from roughly the second half of the 11th century into the 16th century-and it underpins medieval society in many ways. But he also insists that chivalry is more than a timeless warrior code. It’s a very bloody profession, and they admire it to excess,” he says. Chivalry was a violent, often grisly, phenomenon. The way people for the past couple of centuries have thought of chivalry isn’t the way medieval knights experienced it. Now he’s completing a book, commissioned by Cambridge University Press, called Medieval Chivalry, which looks at the concept generally. Kaeuper has devoted his career to it, with books such as Holy Warriors: The Religious Ideology of Chivalry (University of Pennsylvania, 2009) and Chivalry and Violence in Medieval Europe (Clarendon Press, 2001). Gallant knights on horseback, banners unfurling before stirring tournaments-today’s popular notions of the chivalric world are profoundly influenced by people in the 19th century who saw the Middle Ages through a romantic haze, says Richard Kaeuper, professor of history.
